For those of you who don’t know, a RIPE meeting is a five-day event where Internet Service Providers (ISPs), network operators and other interested parties gather to discuss issues of interest to the Internet community. 6connect’s CEO, Aaron Hughes, attended this conference. RIPE 71 took place on November 16-20 in Bucharest, Romania.
Day 1 began with several parallel tutorials: NetDevOps – Ansible 101 to Network Nirvana, Introduction to RIPE Meetings and RIPE Database Tips and Tricks. The Newcomers session gave first-time attendees a“RIPE Meeting 101” tutorial with help from RIPE NCC Managing Director Axel Pawlik and RIPE Chair Hans Petter Holen.
Other highlights include a presentation from Valentina Pavel on the EU-US “safe harbour” agreement and the impact of the recent European court ruling, Collin Anderson discussing his work on export controls on certain ICT technologies, and Oana Niculaescu’s presentation of a statistical analysis done with M-Lab looking at the correlation between socioeconomic status and Internet access.
There was also plenty of IPv6 chatter, which was awesome. George Michaelson gave a really great presentation on IPv6 deployment (day two). One significant recent IPv6 deployment that was highlighted is by cable provider Sky UK which is upgrading approximately 80,000 customers to per night, with nearly 17% of their hosts currently enabled for IPv6, putting them on target for 20%+ IPv6 capability by 2016. T-Mobile USA is also known to have deployed 464XLAT, allowing clients on IPv6-only networks to access IPv4-only services. This trend in IPv6 adoption means around 60-80% IPv6 capability.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the next RIPE event!
